Questions

Emergency Dental FAQ

Answers to common questions about dental emergencies and how we can help.

A dental emergency includes any situation that requires immediate attention to relieve severe pain, stop ongoing bleeding, or save a tooth. Common emergencies include severe toothaches, knocked-out or broken teeth, dental abscesses (swelling or infection), lost fillings or crowns, jaw injuries, and uncontrolled bleeding. If you're unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us and we'll advise you.
Yes, we do our best to accommodate emergency patients on the same day you call. We understand that dental emergencies can't wait, so we keep availability in our schedule for urgent cases. Call us as early in the day as possible at (03) 9898 6701, and we'll work to fit you in promptly.
Time is critical when a tooth is knocked out. Handle the tooth by the crown (the white part), never the root. If it's dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline, but don't scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket and hold it in place by gently biting on a clean cloth. If you can't reinsert it, keep it moist in a glass of milk or tuck it inside your cheek. Then get to our clinic within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
The cost of emergency dental care varies depending on the type and severity of your emergency and the treatment required. We'll always discuss costs with you before proceeding with treatment, so there are no surprises. We accept all major health funds and can process your claim on the spot. For patients without private health insurance, we can discuss payment options. Call us to learn more.
If you experience a dental emergency outside our business hours, please go to your nearest hospital emergency department for immediate care, especially if there is uncontrolled bleeding, severe swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, or a jaw injury. For non-life-threatening emergencies, call our clinic number and leave a message, and we'll get back to you first thing the next business day and prioritise your appointment. Our hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm.
